The government has revealed a further 15,000 people will benefit from a £6.5 million initiative that aims to protect vulnerable households from burglars.

Home Office minister Alan Campbell announced that the Safer Homes Fund has been extended by £1.5 million, with a total of 60,000 individuals set to benefit from the project.

People covered by the pot include the elderly and single parent families in priority areas and the money is used to pay for someone to secure properties against burglary.

Although national rates for the crime have dropped by 54 per cent since 1997, Mr Campbell explained: "We know that during economic downturns crimes like this can face upward pressure."

Those seeking a UK insurance policy to protect their properties may also be interested in a recent survey by esure, which found seven per cent of respondents' homes had been burgled using a spare key they had hidden outside.
