Warning for skiers about drinking on piste

Personal insurance

27th November 2009

UK insurance policy customers are advised that drunken skiers can pose a risk during winter holidays.

In a poll by Confused.com, one in four respondents said that they had been affected on the slopes by inebriation, including falling over while tipsy or being hit by skiers who had consumed alcohol.

The survey also discovered that 30 per cent of those quizzed wrongly believed that their insurance covered them for incidents taking place after they had been drinking.

"All travel insurance contracts include an exclusion regarding claims made as a result of alcohol consumption," the website's Steve Williams explained. "Skiers must be made aware of the risk they take if drinking when on holiday."

Those most likely to combine alcohol with skiing include 31 to 35-year-olds - with more than 26 per cent of this age group going onto the piste after more than two glasses of wine - and men.

Skiers are advised to take out winter sports cover before heading off on breaks this winter in order to cover any unexpected incidents or medical bills, with the European Health Insurance Card only providing limited protection.
