ABI issues advice following floods

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has issued businesses and individuals with advice as work gets underway to clear up the recent damage caused by flooding in the UK.
Places in Cumbria, Scotland, Lancashire, the north-east of England and Northern Ireland have all been hit by the heavy rains and the organisation has advised people to contact their insurers as soon as possible.
Further heavy rains are expected this winter and UK insurance policy customers are advised that many companies have 24-hour helplines to provide assistance in the event that the weather damages properties or business operations.
"The good news is that insurers are on hand to react quickly and start the drying out and restoration process as soon as possible," ABI director of general insurance and health Nick Starling noted.
Alternative accommodation should be arranged with insurers if buildings cannot be used, as drying out those hit by flood waters can take months, particularly at this time of year, while damaged items should be kept or photographed wherever possible to assist with claims.
