More than half of Britons 'donating to charity despite recession'

Charities

18th November 2009

In spite of the current economic downturn, more than one in two people in the UK are still giving money to charity, a new poll has revealed.

According to Moneysupermarket.com, the data suggests that adults are still keen to donate, but are becoming more careful about where their cash goes.

The website has advised Britons to ensure that they consider where to give money to carefully and opt for a way that suits them best.

Charities have been one sector that has suffered as a result of the UK recession, with total giving dipping by £1.3 billion to £9.9 billion in 2008-09 compared with the previous financial year.

"Charitable credit cards are an easy way of supporting a worthy cause, as all you have to do is use your card in the normal way," Peter Harrison, moneysupermarket.com credit card expert, observed, adding that charity-linked savings accounts are also available.

Organisations seeking an UK insurance policy may also be interested to find that a recent study carried out by Coutts & Co and the Centre for Philanthropy at the University of Kent found that donors are still keen to fulfil their pledges in the current climate.
