The government has launched a new campaign targeted at students and elderly people and aimed at reducing burglary rates in the UK.

Under the new £15 million Home Office drive, practice advice and support will be provided to groups who are vulnerable to distraction theft in which burglars trick their way into people's homes.

The scheme was launched by Graham Cole, star of television series The Bill, during a role play class on the issue at the Peckham Settlement in London.

During the six-month initiative, free Secure Your Home packs will be distributed and specialist advice will be offered at road shows across England and Wales in a bid to reduce the number of distraction burglaries taking place each year from the current level of around 9,000.

"It is vital people remember to check the identity of any stranger who calls at their home, genuine callers will not mind waiting," Home Office minister Alan Campbell advised.

Those seeking a UK insurance policy may also be interested to note that a recent survey by Opinium Research found that burglary is considered to be the most significant threat to their property by 65 per cent of respondents.
