Travel cover 'essential for Christmas breaks'

Personal insurance

13th November 2009

Holidaymakers visiting one of the many famous Christmas markets taking place overseas this year must ensure that they are adequately covered.

This is the warning contained in a new report that emphasises the importance of travel insurance even for short breaks to protect against incidents such as lost luggage, flight delays and accidents.

A survey of 2,000 consumers by website Confused.com found that one in ten (19 per cent) Britons are planning a trip to a Christmas market abroad this year.

However, many people will neglect to take out policies ahead of their trips, leaving them at financial risk if they should suffer problems in a foreign country, while items and gifts they are bringing home may not be covered.

The portal's head of travel insurance, Steve Williams, remarked: "Insurance, for this type of trip, can often be overlooked as the trips are usually only for a matter of days."

Meanwhile, Carl Christopher, a spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, recently advised those planning a skiing or snowboarding trip this winter to "snow before you go" and plan carefully in order to reduce the risk of accidents on the slopes.
