Car owners warned about increased risk

Car insurance customers are reminded that the level of accidents increases when the clocks go back each year.
Darker evenings and shorter periods of daylight push up claims and Zurich Connect has reported that it has seen an 11 per cent rise in incidents over this period for three consecutive years, compared with the two weeks prior to the time change.
"Daylight saving has become a dark week on Britain's roads as accidents shoot up," the firm's Mike Quinton remarked, noting that some drivers find it harder to adjust to doing journeys in the dark, while "wet and windy" autumn weather can exacerbate the problem.
Motorists are advised to ensure that their windows are clean, their tyres are properly inflated, lights are not dirty and washer fluid is topped up in order to minimise the risk of crashes.
In related news, the Department for Transport has launched a new campaign urging road users to look out for children as winter nights close in, as 712 young people between the ages of six and 11 were killed or seriously injured walking and 155 while cycling on UK roads last year.
