Second-home owners 'travelling without insurance'

Many Britons who own second homes overseas are failing to take out travel insurance before visiting their properties, it has been claimed.

According to new research, those visiting their own or the holiday home of a friend or family member are nine time more likely to do so without cover.

The study for website Gocompare.com indicated that thousands of people will use the half-term break to travel overseas, but many will fail to make sure that they are insured in case something happens while they are there.

Lee Griffin, the website's business development director, warned that although second homes may "feel more safe and secure", travellers are "still just as prone to illness, accident, theft or travel delays as someone on a package holiday".

More than a quarter (28.8 per cent) of those visiting a second home do not have cover, compared with 3.2 per cent of package deal customers and 12.8 per cent of independent travellers, although many have suffered problems on holiday in the past.

Last month, a report by moneysupermarket.com claimed that people are engaging in more risky activities when they are abroad, potentially affecting premiums.
