Car insurance customers warned about illegal tread

Personal insurance

12th October 2009

It is important to check tyre tread regularly to ensure that it meets legal minimum requirements, according to a specialist.

Tim Shallcross, Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) head of technical policy and advice, suggested that although many drivers are careful about keeping tyre pressures correct, they often fail to do the same about tread depth.

He suggested that this is why "lots of cars fail their MOT through their tyres being illegal", something that may interest car insurance holders.

According to Mr Shallcross, if tracking is out it can result in tyres becoming worn on the inside but appearing "quite okay from the outside".

The IAM expert explained that "good garages" provide detailed advice to customers about the required depth of tread and urged motorists to check wear indicators to assess the condition of tyres.

During Tyre Safety Month this October, TyreSafe is highlighting the risks of travelling with illegal tread depth and recommends drivers insert a 20p piece into tread, getting tyres checked if the outer band of the coin is visible.
