Bosses urged not to become complacent

Bosses must ensure that they do not become complacent about employment law in the wake of a fall in tribunals, an expert has stated.

According to the Tribunals Service, the number of claims made against employers fell by 20 per cent between 2007-08 and 2008-09 to 151,000.

However, XpertHR senior employment law editor Stephen Simpson told Personnel Today that managers should be aware that while the overall total has fallen, the number of single claims accepted rose by 15 per cent to 63,000.

"With claims relating to redundancy increasing dramatically and equal pay claims falling, it appears that employees are putting keeping their jobs ahead of worrying about how much they are paid," he explained.

Insurance for business customers may also be interested in Mr Simpson's advice that employers should be particularly careful during the redundancy selection process to ensure that they do not leave themselves open to allegations of discrimination.

During 2008-09, the majority of claimants (85,871) were represented by lawyers, no information was provided for 41,270 and 8,812 were supported by union officials.
