Insurance 'helps to protect students' valuable items'

Personal insurance

Valuable items being taken by students to university can be protected by an effective insurance policy, an expert has suggested.

According to Cambridge University Student Union welfare officer Amiya Bhatia, cover should be taken out by those living independently for the first time as there is "always a certain amount of risk accompanying moving to a new place".

She added that "expensive possessions such as musical instruments, laptops and bikes can be vital to a student's academic and social experience" and insurance can protect against loss or damage, as well as any additional costs incurred in relation to them.

Ms Bhatia stated that such cover can also "make budgeting simpler" and advised students to ensure that they take measures to protect themselves and their property when they start university.

Last month, price comparison website moneysupermarket.com urged young people to advise their car insurance providers when they move to different accommodation to ensure that policies and premiums are amended to reflect the change.
