Charity witnesses fall in donations during downturn

Charities

30th September 2009

The recession has affected charitable giving and some people have cancelled standing orders to a leading UK organisation because of the slowdown, it has been revealed.

Kidscape deputy director Peter Bradley explained that "there has been a reduction in the donations we are getting" during the downturn" and the amount donated by each person had dipped over the past year.

He suggested that "the charities need to let the public know that in terms of a recession it is still important that they continue to donate" and greater government funding would ensure that "more pence in the pound" would go to services provided by third sector bodies.

According to Mr Bradley, the public needs to be educated about using money wisely during the recession to ensure that voluntary groups do not suffer, as many are being forced to re-examine their financial positions because of a drop in donations.

His remarks follow a report from the Charities Aid Foundation, which revealed that the amount given to 170,000 organisations in the UK has fallen by 11 per cent to £9.9 billion.
