Britain's third sector has been praised as the "best in the world" by a government official.

Minister for the third sector Angela Smith stated that charities and voluntary groups in the UK are setting other countries an example in terms of areas such as campaigning, community work and research.

With 870,000 civil society organisations, the UK's third sector is supported by income of around £116 billion a year and benefits from voluntary work carried out by millions of people.

Addressing the Third Sector Excellence Awards, Ms Smith stated that the third sector "works tirelessly", adding: "No other country in the world has a sector like it, and we should be very proud."

Meanwhile, recent data from the Charities Aid Foundation and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations indicated that charitable giving in the UK dropped by 11 per cent to £9.9 billion over the past year as a result of the downturn.
