Call for liability extension to motor compensation rules

Commercial insurance

25th September 2009

A new system that will see personal injury claims relating to road accidents resolved more quickly should be extended to cover incidents in the workplace, it has been suggested.

According to the director of general insurance and health at the Association of British Insurers, the government should introduce rules that "cover employers' liability claims".

Nick Starling welcomed the news that legal costs and the length of time taken to agree compensation in motor insurance disputes would be reduced, but added: "It is now vital that employees injured at work have the same opportunity as those injured on our roads to benefit from this new process."

The ABI estimates that the Ministry of Justice announcement this week could benefit around 400,000 injured on the roads and follow a campaign by the organisation to streamline the system.

It will apply to personal injury claims value at £1,000-£10,000 and will see legal costs fixed for each stage of the damages process.
