Minister launches UK care debate

The government is holding a new debate on the future of social care in Britain.

Launched by care services minister Phil Hope, it is intended to provide feedback on proposals for a "radical reform of the care and support system".

The Big Care Debate, entitled Face of Care, includes an online application that "ages" photographs of people digitally to show them what they may look like in retirement.

It follows research that indicated that 80 per cent of respondents plan to check their email daily by the time they reach 70, 33 per cent expect to have cutting-edge technology such as smartphones and 24 per cent plan to download music to MP3 players.

"At the moment, there's a big gap between people's aspirations and what is affordable under the current care and support system," Mr Burnham explained, adding that there is a need for change.

Government plans under consultation include the creation of a new National Care Service that is intended to provide older people with greater and more affordable support.

In related news, an initiative launched by Alzheimer's Society and Bupa in care homes is aimed at improving conditions and quality of life for residents with dementia by ensuring high standards across the board.
