Drivers advised to 'stay insured' during downturn

Despite the recession, drivers must ensure that they remain properly insured, it has been stated.
That is the message from the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB), which has launched a new six-month nationwide campaign on behalf of the industry to tackle the 1.7 million uninsured drivers in the UK.
The Stay Insured push is intended to highlight the potential consequences of getting behind the wheel without cover, amid fears that the recession will increase the problem and see people cutting back to save cash and 75 per cent of motorists looking for ways to reduce their insurance costs.
Backed by Police Interceptors and You're Nicked presenter Natalie Pinkham, the campaign will focus on drivers who may be uncertain about whether or not to renew their policies and will promote the penalties for not having motor insurance.
"It is a false economy to drive uninsured especially when appropriate and affordable insurance cover is available from an insurance broker," British Insurance Brokers Association technical and corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill said.
The Department for Transport recently announced plans to make keeping vehicles without insurance illegal unless they are registered as off the road.
