Insurers welcome government plans to target illegal drivers

Government proposals aimed at reducing the number of uninsured motorists on UK roads have been welcomed by an industry leader.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association's technical and corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill welcomed them as "positive progress" and "fantastic news" for the sector.

Under the Department for Transport plans, keeping vehicles without insurance would become illegal - as well as driving cars without cover - unless they are registered as off the road.

"It is important for people to stay insured for financial protection and to comply with the law," he remarked, pointing out that around 26 deaths and 23,000 injuries annually are linked to uninsured drivers and the practice costs £500 million a year.

Car insurance customers may be interested to learn that Andrew Howard, AA head of public affairs, has predicted that the proposed legislation could reduce premiums by up to £30-£50 per year and make roads safer.
