Advice hub for sustainable construction launched

Construction

17th September 2009

A new project will provide small and medium-sized businesses in the north-west of England with advice and information about sustainable construction, cutting carbon emissions and reducing waste.

It is a collaboration led by Salford University's Centre for Construction Innovation and including Central Lancashire University, Urban Vision, Liverpool University and the Building Research Establishment.

The institutions have contributed a total of £1.5 million towards the scheme, which has also received £1.5 million from the Northwest Regional Development Agency and a further £3 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

Specialist advice will be given to smaller firms by the consortium regarding issues such as using recycled materials, heat conservation, solar heating and using less concrete in construction.

"These grants will help small businesses beat the recession, as well as provide longer term benefits to the industry," Professor Martin Hall, vice-chancellor of Salford University, said.

Liability insurance customers may also be interested in the fact that a report on the government's Strategy for Sustainable Construction recently concluded that "good progress" has been made since its launch in June last year.
