New scheme promotes improved dementia care

A new initiative has been rolled out in care homes across the UK in a bid to improve conditions and quality of life for residents suffering from dementia.

Alzheimer's Society and Bupa are collaborating on the project, which is intended to ensure that high standards of care are achieved across the board.

Under the Dementia Champions Programme, in-house leaders will be developed at 130 Bupa facilities after a pilot at six care homes was deemed successful.

Neil Hunt, Alzheimer's Society chief executive, explained that "delivering good dementia care is a skilled task and staff need access to continuous development".

He added that improving standards will require a change in the culture of workplaces.

Counsel and Care spokeswoman Caroline Bernard recently suggested that the UK's care system needs "urgent action" and funding in order to ensure that people receive the services they require, while those who are given support at home are not "penalised".
