British consumers have been told to examine their home insurance policies in light of the growing number of people electing to entertain themselves at home instead of going out.
Pointing to research from her company indicating that dinner parties are proving popular during the economic downturn as individuals seek to cut costs, moneysupermarket.com's Julie Owens said home cover should be looked at in order to make sure the protection is there against the risks these gatherings could pose.
"It's worth checking the small print when it comes to exclusions for accidental damage and personal liability cover and what insurers will consider as an 'insurable' risk, for example spilling something on a new carpet," she remarked.
Approximately 65 per cent of Brits told the price comparison site they are more likely to stay at home during the evenings as a result of the credit crunch, while 11 per cent have turned to dinner parties, barbecues and other stay-at-home activities to get their entertainment.
Last month, the company revealed the UK's hotspots for burglary and theft, with the town of Arnold, Nottinghamshire topping the table as the most likely place to make a home insurance claim as a result of such crime.
