Consultation on charity law merger launched

Charities

14th September 2009

A consultation document has been published for the proposed consolidation of charity legislation by the Office of the Third Sector.

Under the draft bill, rules laid out in the Recreational Charities Act 1958, Charities Act 1993 and the majority of the Charities Act 2006 will be brought together in one place, modernised and made easier to understand.

Minister Angela Smith suggested that combining the legislation could make obeying the law simpler for charities, building on the achievements of the 2006 Charities Act, which introduced rules to ensure equality and reduced red tape.

Referring to the consultation period, she added: "The views of all those who work with charity law will help ensure that we develop the clearest and most user-friendly bill as possible."

Reforming charity law and monitoring new legislation to make sure charities are not put at a disadvantage are among the main responsibilities of the Office of the Third Sector.
