The UK now has a total of 711 breweries across the country producing over 2,500 different kinds of ale, new statistics have revealed.

Pub insurance customers may be interested to note that, although 52 establishments are closing a week during the recession, real ale is experiencing something of a rebirth.

According to a report by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), the industry is "thriving", something the organisation's Good Beer Guide editor Roger Protz described as "wonderful to see".

Camra published the figures to launch its Good Beer Guide 2010 and announced a total of 1,297 new entries for pubs and 71 for breweries in the 37th edition of the book.

The group has also announced its winners for Regional Pub of the Year 2009 and plans to unveil the National Pub of the Year in February 2010.

With over 100,000 members, Camra promotes real ale and pubs in the UK and champions consumers with regards to both the British and European beer and drinks sector.
