Businesses advised to consider foot health

Commercial insurance

10th September 2009

Companies should take the foot health of their workers into account in order to ensure that they do not suffer problems as a result of unsuitable shoes, it has been claimed.

The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists (SCP) suggested that the issue should be included in risk assessments by employers in order to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation.

A motion was tabled by the organisation at the recent Trades Union Congress annual meeting raising concerns about the potential risks to health of forcing female staff to wear high heels under workplace dress codes.

According to the SCP, employees should not be required to wear footwear that could cause them problems and the society's employment relations director Eddie Saville stated that it is "a serious issue for women in the workplace".

Data from the TUC used by the society indicated that 80 per cent of adults in the UK have difficulties of some kind with their feet.

Common foot problems can include ageing, bunions, callus, gout, ingrowing toenails and arthritis.
