Women drivers may be placing themselves at risk because oversized handbags mean that it takes them a long time to search for keys.
According to a study by Fly Research, female motorists spend 416 hours in a lifetime rummaging around for them and one in three women polled admitted to feeling panicky when they cannot locate keys.
A further 12 per cent of respondents said that they had lost either their whole handbag or part of its contents as a result of theft when they were distracted and 28 per cent reported feeling as though they were being followed while walking alone to their vehicle.
Commenting on the research, director of personal safety at the Suzy Lamplugh Trust Jenny Fawson advised: "Two of the most important things a woman can do to improve her safety is to stay aware of her surroundings and to avoid potentially dangerous situations."
Earlier this year, the charity unveiled its new National Centre for Personal Safety on the Strand in London.
