Warning over charity cuts "disaster"

Reducing funding for charities in the UK could spell "disaster" for some, it has been suggested.
According to the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), local communities could suffer if vital public services relating to housing, education, training, employment, social care and advocacy are lost as a result of a fall in spending.
In its report - The State and the Voluntary Sector - Recent trends in government funding and public service delivery - the umbrella body warned the government that the sector should not be viewed as an "easy target" for spending cuts, with around 25,000 groups currently sourcing more than three-quarters of their income from statutory sources.
NCVO chief executive Stuart Etherington remarked: "Public sector funders must avoid a knee jerk reaction. Ill thought out cuts would ravage communities across the UK."
The government recently announced that 558 voluntary organisations will each receive a share of £15 million in order to help them address shortfalls in donations and investments caused by the recession.
