Companies should prepare now for the possibility of a further swine flu outbreak this winter, an expert has suggested.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development's public policy adviser, there is a risk of the virus returning this winter and organisations should "assess [the] business activities that [they] need to ensure that the business can operate".

Ben Willmott explained that business continuity plans can play an important role in ensuring that firms do not experience expensive disruptions to their operations in the event of a pandemic, something that may interest those seeking insurance for business.

He was commenting after figures from the Business Continuity Institute suggested that 57 per cent of companies polled still have no or insufficient plans in place to tackle swine flu.

Mr Willmott also advocated implementing home working practices, identifying key workers and those holding transferable skills, providing specific training and carrying out risk assessments for the smooth running of their businesses.
