The government should make the improvement of end of life care in Britain a "major national priority", an expert has declared.

According to the National Council for Palliative Care's director of policy, ethics and parliamentary affairs, many professionals are being required to care for dying people without sufficient knowledge, something that may interest UK insurance policy customers in the sector.

Simon Chapman suggested that "good dignified care at the end of life" is "vital" and called on the government to "make sure that we have got properly trained health and social care professionals", advocating courses in palliative treatment before registration.

He was commenting after medical practitioners criticised the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) in a letter to The Daily Telegraph, claiming that it can mask signs of improvement in patients by placing them under continuous sedation.

Mr Chapman said that the LCP is a "tool" that should be used correctly to enhance the quality of care provided to those who are dying.
