Travel insurance 'is not a luxury'

Travellers should not view insurance for their trips as "an add-on or a luxury", an expert has insisted.
According to a spokesman for the Association of British Insurers (ABI), cover is a "central integral part of planning any trip overseas" and should be viewed as such.
He explained that failing to pay for a policy before setting off on a holiday "is taking a risk that is unnecessary" and could lead to expensive financial consequences, particularly outside the European Union.
With so-called staycations becoming more popular, the ABI representative also emphasised the importance of insurance when taking trips in the UK, as it can prove costly for people if their possessions are lost or stolen without it.
He was commenting after a recent survey by bank Lloyds TSB discovered that one in ten Britons (5.2 million people) have taken a holiday without travel cover, with reasons given for such an omission including forgetting and lack of time.
