Government to fund 500 charities

Charities

27th August 2009

The government has announced that 558 voluntary organisations in the UK will receive a share of £15 million in order to help them to survive the recession.

Many charity insurance customers have had their funding reduced as a result of the downturn hitting both donations and investments and the new Targeted Support Fund aims to address the problem.

The Cabinet Office has announced that grants of between £10,000 and £40,000 will be given to frontline groups to assist them in the provision of essential community services relating to employment, guidance, information, health and wellbeing.

Minister for the third sector Angela Smith declared that the government will "continue to offer unprecedented support to the sector through the major initiatives launched in the action plan Real Help for Communities".

The document was released in February this year and more than 1,600 bodies have already received financial support totalling £16.7 million in the form of loans, grants and bursaries.

Meanwhile, a recent study by the Cass Business School discovered that medical charities are the most popular to be left legacies in wills, followed by animal-related organisations and groups concerned with children.
