UK travel insurance policyholders 'should disclose medical conditions'

Holidaymakers should ensure they tell their UK travel insurance providers about any medical problems they have when purchasing a policy, according to a national newspaper.

The Guardian said it is "vital" that people disclose such information and check that they will be covered in cases where a vacation needs to be cancelled as a result of a pre-existing condition.

Other tips given by the publication include making sure at least £2 million of emergency medical cover is provided by the policy - as well as repatriation - and examining the small print carefully.

Travellers should also look online for reviews of insurance vendors, stick to providers and deals that appear trustworthy and be aware of the conditions involved with the excess.

The Association of British Insurers announced recently that the insurance industry is keeping a closer eye on claims in order to detect fraudsters.

Director of general insurance and health Nick Starling said those who attempt to cheat the system will be in for a "nasty and expensive shock".
