The government needs to concentrate on addressing "the real, fundamental difficulties" being experienced by retailers on UK high streets, an expert has claimed.
Richard Dodd, a spokesperson for the British Retail Consortium (BRC), suggested that ministers should focus on "providing the services and jobs that local communities need" by giving support to companies before they fail.
His comments come after the government unveiled plans to offer £3 million of funding to local authorities in order to provide community facilities in response to store closures and rejuvenate the centre of towns and their high streets.
Retail insurance customers may be interested to note that Mr Dodd suggested initiatives aimed at reducing crime, delivering more parking facilities and improving access to town centres could help high street businesses survive the downturn.
Communities secretary John Denham announced this week that 57 of the UK's hardest-hit areas would be given funding to enhance their high streets.
