Ensuring that immigrant workers have equal rights is an important factor in ensuring that their benefits are maximised, according to the head of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, explained that "we need strong and equal rights at work for everyone" to ensure that employees from overseas are persuaded to remain in the UK.

He noted that "many public services and private businesses depend on UK and migrant labour" and emphasised the importance of using legislation to increase retention rates, adding that "we all benefit from the skills and work they bring".

Mr Barber's comments follow a report by the Institute for Public Policy Research, which indicated that three million migrant workers have left the UK over the past 30 years, with the rate increasing as a result of the economic downturn.

Insurance for business customers may also be interested to note that the study also revealed that 85 per cent of employees from overseas polled stated that they only planned to remain in Britain for the short term.
