Swine flu risk 'could re-emerge later'

The risk of a swine flu pandemic that causes widespread disruption to UK companies could resurface later this year, it has been suggested.

Research by the Institute of Directors (IoD) indicated that 85 per cent of bosses have not found that their day-to-day operations have been widely affected by the virus.

However, Corin Taylor, IoD senior policy adviser, warned that although most respondents had not reported "severe" problems caused by the outbreak, "we may by in the calm before the storm" and the disease could become a "full blown pandemic later in the year".

The poll of more than 750 of the organisation's members also discovered that many were concerned that some workers were exploiting official guidance relating to the H1N1 virus, something that may be of note to businesses seeking liability insurance.

Last week, the Health Protection Agency reported a decline in the number of new swine flu cases in England, with most people affected suffering from relatively mild symptoms.
