Around one in ten shoppers in Britain do not receive goods or services for which they have paid in advance, a new study has revealed.
Research by Consumer Focus discovered that 48 per cent of those who do not get their orders fulfilled also fail to get their money back, with the average loss per consumer being around £242.
Insurance customers may be interested to note that the organisation has called for greater protection for prepayments in order to reduce such incidents.
A major reason given for an estimated 1.8 million British shoppers not receiving goods or services they had paid for over the past two years was the collapse of retailers or suppliers.
"Consumers are losing out in the fight to reclaim money from bankrupt businesses," Steve Brooker, Consumer Focus markets expert, stated.
In related news, the Federation of Small Businesses recently warned that levels of crime against UK firms have risen as a result of the recession, placing many under increased pressure.
