A former employee of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is taking the department to court for allegedly failing to provide him with the support and training he needed to handle an existing stress illness.

John Salisbury-Baker has claimed that bosses were aware of his condition but he was required to perform tasks that he found "morally indefensible", the Guardian reports.

The 62-year-old is suing the MoD for disability discrimination over accusations that his problems became more severe after he was asked to tell families of dead soldiers that they had been properly equipped for battle, something that he was uncomfortable doing.

He will state at his tribunal that the ministry - which has refused to comment on the case while proceedings are pending – did not make adequate provision when his illness became worse, causing him to leave employment.

Recent data from the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service suggested that the number of allegations of disability discrimination rose by 4.1 per cent during 2008-09 to 3,977.
