There were no fatalities among offshore workers during 2008-09 and safety incidents in the sector have fallen to a record low, new figures have revealed.
According to data from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the latest statistics indicate that the industry is becoming less dangerous, with no workers killed for two years in a row.
The report also showed that the combined fatal and major injury rate among offshore employees fell from 156 per 100,000 workers in 2007/08 to 106 last year, something that may interest liability insurance customers.
Meanwhile, the number of major and significant hydrocarbon releases also fell to its lowest level yet in 2008-09, dropping to 61 from 74 the previous year.
"Carrying forward last year's success will require continued industry focus on integrity management, safe systems of work, supervision, risk assessment and competence," Ian Whewell, head of the HSE's offshore division, remarked.
In related news, the HSE has issued a caution to farmers preparing for this year's harvest not to cut corners when it comes to safety.
