The government has unveiled a new initiative aimed at increasing levels of volunteering in Britain.
Part of plans to tackle the recession, the National Talent Bank will operate as an intermediary between businesses who are reducing working hours and third sector organisations in order to make more effective use of professionals.
The scheme, launched by the prime minister, is intended to help the public, private and third sectors to "share the talent" and was developed by the Council on Social Action.
"Volunteers themselves benefit, as do the people they help and the country as a whole. So I welcome the National Talent Bank and wish it every success," Gordon Brown remarked.
Meanwhile, minister for the third sector Angela Smith has announced that Dame Suzi Leather will serve as chair of the Charity Commission for a second term of office in order to provide it with stability as it carries out "extensive modernisation" of the legal framework unveiled in the Charities Act 2006.
