Landlords in the UK should be provided with more help and support in the current economic climate, it has been claimed.
According to an article by John Fitzsimons of website lovemoney.com, "we need a strong rental sector" and investors should be given "breathing space" such as a buy-to-let version of the Homeowner Mortgage Support Scheme.
Such a system would allow landlords to defer interest payments on mortgages, he explained, adding that the property market needs buy-to-let investors, who "help take the pressure off the state".
Commenting on Mr Fitzsimons' report, chairman of the National Landlords Association David Salusbury explained that some landlords had "faced severe financial difficulty" - including rental arrears - as a result of the recession and "sufficient space" is needed to allow them to cope with their financial problems.
Richard Bowser, editor at Property Investor News, recently suggested that confidence is returning to the private rental sector in the UK with "potential green shoots of recovery in the economy".
