Warning over construction security risks

Construction

22nd June 2009

Failure to adequately secure construction sites could be placing public safety at risk, it has been suggested.

According to the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (Ucatt), there has been a significant move in recent years to improve the "image, regulation and training" of security personnel at sites.

However, the construction union noted that membership of the Security Industry Association is not mandatory and the casualisation of security guards could increase the risk of a terrorist attack on sites "in safety critical locations", which may interest liability insurance customers.

"Security matters should be the primary concern of construction bosses with building projects in highly sensitive places such as the City of London," Alan Ritchie, Ucatt general secretary, stated.

Ucatt is targeting a number of firms that are not members of the scheme in order to boost security at sensitive sites and encourage them to use registered companies.

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health recently urged construction businesses to do more to ensure that they protect the health and safety of migrant workers.
