The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a campaign to improve health and safety standards on refurbishment projects.
Inspectors from the agency will visit schemes in Warrington on Wednesday June 17th to ensure that work is planned effectively and carried out safely, with suitable equipment used.
The HSE is focusing on small-scale projects to ensure that health and safety standards are being met, which may be of interest to liability insurance customers.
Wayne Crumpton, the HSE's principal inspector for Cheshire, explained: "The recession has obviously affected the construction industry but we've seen an increase in small-scale refurbishment projects."
A total of 38 people died working on property refurbishment, repair and maintenance in the UK during 2007-08, with the majority of fatalities caused by falls from height.
HSE inspector Michelle Morrison recently urged companies to ensure that they fully assess the risks of working at height to prevent accidents.
