Health and safety is "no joke" and plays an important role in boosting business performance and enhancing wellbeing, an expert has claimed.
Rob Strange, chief executive of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), said: "There are many more deaths, serious injuries and cases of ill-health at work than silly risk-averse decisions we continue to read about in the press."
Welcoming a new strategy from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), he noted that there were 229 deaths and more than 136,000 serious injuries related to work last year and suggested that health and safety is "much misunderstood in this country".
New research from the HSE has indicated that 65 per cent of workers report that good health and safety practices make them feel valued, a fact that may interest public liability insurance customers.
The IOSH is an independent non-profit organisation for health and safety professionals, which aims to maintain standards, provide guidance and regulate the sector.
