As petrol prices rise above £1 per litre, drivers are becoming increasingly interested in alternative fuel vehicles, it has been suggested.
According to manufacturer Proton, sales of its GEN-2 ecoLogic liquid petroleum gas (LPG) car have increased by 375 per cent in the past month.
The company stated that, despite falling sales for many other motor manufacturers, it has witnessed a sharp rise in interest over the past year.
LPG vehicles can reduce costs and carbon emissions for motorists and Proton estimates that the average driver covering 12,000 miles a year could save around £670 on fuel, which may interest motor insurance customers.
Simon Park, sales director at Proton UK, said: "LPG gives motorists the best of both worlds - it has been proved to be more eco-friendly than petrol and diesel and also it costs almost half the price to run."
Proton vehicles are currently available under the government scrappage scheme, which provides incentives of up to £2,000 for the purchase of a new car.
