Safe construction sites 'make commercial sense'

Ensuring that builders and construction workers are safe can benefit companies, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has claimed.
The agency has unveiled a new strategy aimed at reducing levels of deaths and injuries in the workplace and HSE regional director for London Stephen Williams suggested that "providing a safe workplace makes sound commercial sense".
Almost eight out of ten business leaders believe that good health and safety standards are beneficial, while 65 per cent of workers find that such practices make them feel valued, according to a recent HSE survey.
More than one in four businesses reported that they are facing pressure to reduce health and safety spending because of the recession, but Mr Williams cautioned against doing so as it could be detrimental.
The HSE strategy outlines the most effective ways of improving workplace health and safety, which may be of interest to liability insurance customers.
A new guide to health and safety compliance has been published by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health for employers aimed at improving staff skills and training.
