Graduates advised to consider charities and SMEs

Charities

9th June 2009

Graduates leaving university should consider applying for positions at charities and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), according to a recruitment expert.

Chris Morrall, managing director at Talent Transitions, claimed that some of the 'cream jobs' for 2010 graduates have already gone, but many SMEs "may want graduates"

"Recruitment for graduates in the public sector and charities is down but still buoyant," he added, stating that those finding it hard to get work should "spread their net wider".

Mr Morrall also suggested that degrees, experience and good personal skills are important in the current climate.

He advised candidates to have their CVs checked carefully by "two or three people" before they send it to potential employers, as the "graduate market is 45 per cent down".

However, a study from Professor Ian Walker of Lancaster University and Yu Zhu of the University of Kent recently found that, despite a rise in university applicants, the earning potential of a degree has not fallen.
