UK garages should adhere to a new industry code of practice in order to provide car insurance customers with the best possible service, an expert has claimed.
Mike Owen, senior technical manager of the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF), urged those businesses that have not yet subscribed to the guidance to do so "in order to participate in directing the future of the industry".
According to Mr Owen, the government is monitoring the garage sector through the Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair and a recent statement from consumer affairs minister Gareth Thomas called for independent garages to sign up to the scheme.
"The message is don't be afraid of the code, it is actually proving what a good job you do," he declared.
New data from the RMIF has indicated that older cash buyers make up the majority of those purchasing new vehicles under the recently launched government car scrappage scheme.
