Medical charities in Britain are facing increasing pressure on funding as a result of the recession, industry leaders have claimed.
According to the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC), public donors and ministers should take "urgent measures" to ensure that organisations "weather the economic downturn".
A poll of its members found that three-quarters believe that the slowdown will have a "significant impact" on their operations, information that may be of interest to charity insurance customers.
Major sources of funding expected to be affected by the current economic climate included investments (68.1 per cent), legacies (51.9 per cent), corporate giving (44.1 per cent), public donations (35.1 per cent) and trusts and foundations (29 per cent).
Just one in ten of those surveyed (9.3 per cent) expected to increase their levels of research funding in 2009-10 and 25.9 per cent planned to reduce it.
Simon Denegri, AMRC chief executive, said: "Smaller charities funding work into less common conditions are being hit particularly hard."
In related news, David Moir, head of policy and public affairs at the Association of Charity Shops, recently stated that charity shops in the UK are benefiting from the recession.
