Call for government funds to restart construction projects

Ministers should provide additional funds to restart stalled construction schemes in order to boost the industry, according to a building specialist.
Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation, suggested that money announced as part of the £635 million plans unveiled in the Budget should be made available "as quickly as possible and as effectively as possible" in order to deliver additional support to the construction sector.
He said that increased state investment is needed in new and existing projects and called for "more money for these sorts of initiatives", adding that "we feel that the impact the housing market has on the wider economy dictates that the government needs to act on this".
Recent figures from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors indicated that construction sector activity fell during the first quarter of this year, with workloads down across all sectors.
Millions were allocated in the 2009 Budget for housing, including £400 million set aside for the Kickstart Housing Delivery Programme to restart work on stalled projects.
