Passengers 'unsure if luggage will turn up'

Just one in five (21 per cent) UK holidaymakers feels 100 per cent certain that their bags will arrive at their destination when they do, a new study has revealed.
Figures from Post Office Travel Insurance show that only 12 per cent of travellers believe that luggage will not be damaged in transit and 13 per cent of respondents had experienced spoiled or stolen items during the past three years at airports.
Commenting on the data, Air Transport Users Counci (AUC) industry affairs manager James Fremantle said that the latest global data for the industry shows "luggage handling improving and fewer bags are being mishandled".
However, he suggested that "airline performance up until last year has not been good enough" and this has affected passenger trust.
An estimated three million bags were lost by airlines in the European Union during 2008, one million of which were never reunited with their rightful owners.
AUC figures suggest that a total of 42 million items of luggage were mishandled by airports globally during 2007, up from 34 million the previous year and 30 million in 2005.
