Vehicle loading warning issued

18th May 2009

Companies are being warned to ensure their vehicles are loaded safely before goods are transported along roads.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued a statement over the weekend that suggested many injuries that occur as a result of objects falling off vehicles could be avoided if firms take care to load them properly.

"Vehicles which are loaded safely for the road can usually be safely unloaded at the workplace - and vice versa," the HSE's head of injury reduction Marcia Cross remarked.

Those without goods in transit cover may be interested to hear that over 2,000 people have been injured in the last three years from loading and unloading accidents of this nature - and 14 have been killed.

Last month, the HSE carried out a number of spotchecks on vehicles in England and Wales and found that over 75 per cent were not loaded in a safe manner.
