Holidaymakers advised to check valuables cover

Personal insurance

15th May 2009

People planning to go on holiday have been advised to check if their valuables are covered by their home insurance policy.

Writing for MSN Money, beatthequote.com said that travellers should be able to make a claim on their travel insurance policies for items that are stolen or lost during their break, but checking the terms and conditions of the cover is recommended.

Homes can also be targeted while people are on holiday, so measures such as installing a timer that can turn lights on and off at night and ensuring all windows and doors locked could help avoid burglaries.

The website commented: "Holidaymakers often suffer at the hands of opportunistic criminals. Being in the UK won't necessarily protect you from theft during your summer break - so ensure you are prepared for the worst."

Those travelling to the Channel Islands are also reminded that they will not be covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) scheme.

The EHIC is free and entitles UK residents to treatment while staying temporarily inside the European Union.
